It’s Time For Giuliani To Shut Up…Mueller Needs To Call His Bluff!

Rudy Giuliani has run out of time. His public relations gig to slow down the Mueller investigation no longer has any credibility. Contrary to what Rudy thinks, he is not running this investigation. For eight months he has given the impression that his buddy, Donald Trump, wants to sit down with Special Counsel Robert Mueller for an interview. Nothing has been further from the truth, which is standard operating procedure for the Trump administration in the first place. Giuliani’s role has been simply a political ploy, an effort to stall the investigation by teasing the American public with a “maybe he will, maybe he won’t, but the president really wants to sit down for an interview” scenario. If Giuliani really thought the president would sit down for an interview with Robert Mueller, he is crazier than we thought. No, Rudy has been stalling in order to spew any number of falsehoods about how corrupt the Mueller investigation is and why his investigation is a “witch hunt.” Here are some examples of Rudy’s handiwork:

  • According to the Wall Street Journal on July 8th, “Rudy Giuliani said Sunday that President Donald Trump would only submit to an interview with Robert Mueller if the special counsel could show a “factual basis” for the Russia investigation, which he characterized as corrupt.” Nice try Rudy but unlike you Mueller isn’t going to say a word about his investigation. He will let his indictments speak for him.
  • Giuliani falsely asserted that Mueller needs to wrap up his investigation by September1st or be in violation Department of Justice rules regarding investigations being conducted in election years. This is not true. The DOJ Inspector General has said; here is no rule that prohibits investigations being conducted during election years…there is generalized, unwritten guidance that prosecutors do not indict political candidates. Last I checked Trump isn’t on the ballot!
  • Jonathan Swan of Axios reported Giuliani as saying on July 30th “ why don’t you write a report and show us what you have, because they don’t have a goddamn thing. It’s like a guy playing poker. He’s bluffing and he’s only got a pair of twos.” Really? Rudy must be suffering from a little dementia. He should go back and check out what Mueller’s investigation has already accomplished. 25 Russians and four Trump associates already indicted for starters. Mueller isn’t bluffing. He is holding three aces and Rudy knows it.
  • Again according to according Axios, “The former New York mayor told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in an interview last nightthat the investigation should be “over by September,” and that Mueller’s case “isn’t going to fizzle. It’s going to blow up on them.” He added, “[T]here’s a lot more to what they did that nobody knows abouiuliani yet … a lot more to the obstruction of justice, to the collusion, to the fake dossier.” Read the full story here.

Those Americans who can still think for themselves and haven’t succumbed to Donald Trump’s con game or his administrations efforts to denigrate the Mueller investigation, including all the pillars of our democracy, can expect a legitimate conclusion to the investigation when Mueller considers his work done. Mueller has a history of being the consummate law enforcement professional; something Giuliani has forgotten long ago when he signed on with Trump.

In all fairness, Mueller has put up with Giuliani’s antics to stall and impede the investigation. He has agreed to discuss Giuliani’s the ever-changing interview demands for the president’s so-called desire to sit for an interview. Eight months of back and forth negotiations is more than enough. Mueller should proceed with his investigation. It all begs the question, if Trump is innocent why not sit down for the interview? I think the answer is obvious.

There are more indictments to come. Mueller is going to drop another shoe indicting Americans guilty of conspiracy and obstruction of justice. Mueller doesn’t need an interview to do this. He can still cast Trump as “an unindicted co-conspirator” and he can still make the case for the president’s obstruction of justice on the grounds of witness tampering.

Nice try Rudy but all you did was give aid and comfort to the enemy by demeaning Mueller’s investigation and the good men and women who keep our country safe from those who would seek to subvert our democratic institutions, namely Valdimir Putin and his Russian thugs.
