The recent demonstrations and violence in Charlottsville, Virginia remind us that we have not come as far as we thought we had as being the “shining light on the hill.” After what seemed to be a long period of dormancy, hatred, bigotry, injustice, and immorality raised its ugly head once again. The result was was violence, death, serious injuries, and destruction of both private and public property. This assault on common decency required an immediate response moral outrage from the president of the United States.
Finally, the president made several tepid acknowledgments of the events in Charlottsville. His remarks lacked any sense of moral outrage. There was no differentiation between the organizers and instigators of the “protest.” Only vague references to others as well as the aforementioned “protesters.” However, ultimately the president was pressured into making a definitive and specific condemnation of the hate groups: the Klu Klu Klan, the Neo-Nazis, the White Supremacists, and the Alt Right to mention a few of the more prominent groups. It was obvious from President Trump’s tone and lack of enthusiasm when reading from prepared remarks for him that he was chagrined and angry.
What is surprising to me, however, the degree to which the major media pundits sat around discussing the president’s lack of moral outrage at the violent outcomes in Charlottsville. Why was the president so reticent to take two days to respond? The easy answer seemed to be that he would alienate and jeopardize his standing with his “base.” After all, these were the people who allegedly elected him! But in my opinion, the answer to all these conjectures and explanations are not a question of the president’s sense of morality. No there is another explanation.
President Trump has no sense of morality. He is an amoral person. President Trump does not care if his actions are right or wrong, or actions that show a lack of care about what is morally right. He has no conscience or scruples is an example of an amoral person. It is not that he knows better. That would be immoral. He just doesn’t care. And that is something we all need to learn about this president. To do otherwise is to deceive ourselves which President Trump has perfected over a lifetime.
