Democrats across the country are waiting for the specific agenda that will help us win back the House and the Senate. No easy task to be sure. Chuck Schumer, the minority leader in the Senate and Nancy Pelosi, the minority leader in the House of Representatives recently announced something called “A Better Deal”. It failed to move me and I suspect many liberals and progressives. In a statement to the Hill, a political newspaper and website in Washington, D.C., Schumer is quoted as saying ““So what did we do wrong? People didn’t know what we stood for, just that we were against Trump. And still believe that.” Indeed they do! Democrats should stop fixating on Trump. The more Democrats rant and rave about his policies and actions (or lack thereof), the more his base loves it. They aren’t going to change their minds anytime soon. Eventually he will get what he deserves, either by the Mueller investigation or his inability to fulfill all his ridiculous campaign promises. Trump’s day of reckoning will come as sure as the sun rises in the East.
In the meantime, Democrats should concentrate on a new agenda and it is not “A Better Deal.” Democrats have to get back to who brought them to the dance to mention a few; the new progressives who were drawn to Bernie Sanders; the oft taken for granted ethnic groups, African Americans, Hispanic and Latinos, Native Americans, Arab Americans, Asian Americans; the LGBTQ community; women who care about freedom of choice, essential medical services, Planned Parenthood, domestic violence and the children of those who are the most vulnerable among us; labor unions and their members who have taken the brunt of the Republican right-to-work and anti collective bargaining laws; thoughtful Independents who can see the fallacies and failures of the Republican Party and of course the term coined by the Bill Clinton “it is the economy stupid.” It is always about the economy, but it can’t be the same old rhetoric and platitudes being offered by the uninspired Democratic Party leaders.
A new Democrat agenda is necessary. We have suffered enough losses up and down the Democrat ticket in too many local, state, and national elections. A new Democrat agenda grounded in the historical values, beliefs, and concerns that are our heritage. It is a heritage born out of a guiding light that “We the people in order to form a more perfect union” to which we must return. It is an agenda, not of rhetoric and platitudes, but an agenda of action. It is a course of action that calls us back to the grassroots. It is only at the grassroots that “We the people” will have our voices heard, our futures determined and our hopes for a more perfect union realized. This will not be an easy task. We will experience defeats as well as victories. We may become discouraged at times, but we must continue to persevere. There will be times our opponents will malign us and threaten our freedoms, but we will resist and protest even more.
A new Democrat agenda, grounded in specific policies and actions developed by those at the grassroots across our nation, in my opinion is a course worth taking. To paraphrase the great political commentator of the 18th century “all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good persons to do nothing”. Now is the time for each of us to do something. In subsequent posts I will endeavor offer some thoughts and ideas which might be considered by those who want to get involved and take action.
